Who do I say He is?

Watch: Pastor Cam’s message entitled “Who do I say He is?”, and then work through the following.

Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:53-14:12

Summary: We see two contrasting yet deeply connected events—Jesus’ rejection in Nazareth and the death of John the Baptist. These passages highlight the reality of spiritual blindness, the consequences of rejecting truth, and the importance of standing firm in faith.

When Jesus returned to His hometown, the people were astonished by His wisdom and miracles, yet they refused to believe in Him. They saw Him only as "the carpenter’s son" rather than the Messiah. Because of their unbelief, Jesus did not perform many miracles there.

In the second passage, we see King Herod, a man torn between his guilty conscience and sinful desires. Though he respected John the Baptist, he ultimately gave in to pride and lust, leading to John’s unjust execution. Herod’s spiritual blindness prevented him from seeing Jesus for who He truly was.

Both stories challenge us to examine our hearts: Do we truly recognize Jesus as the Son of God, or do we allow doubt, pride, or sin to cloud our vision?

Key Scriptures: Matthew 13:53; Matthew 4:1-12; Isaiah 8:14; Romans 9:31-33; Matthew 11:6; 2 Timothy 2:22; Galatians 5:16; Proverbs 11:6; Proverbs 16:18; Mark 8:27-29; Philippians 2:9-11

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why do you think the people of Nazareth rejected Jesus despite His wisdom and miracles?

  2. How does pride or familiarity sometimes keep us from recognizing God’s work in our lives?

  3. In what ways do we see Herod wrestling between conviction and sin? How does this reflect struggles in our own faith journey?

  4. How do we respond when people reject us for following Christ? What can we learn from Jesus’ response to rejection?

  5. What does it mean to have Kingdom Vision, and how can we apply it in our daily lives?

Personal Application:

  1. Recognize Jesus for Who He Is – Don’t let familiarity or personal expectations keep you from fully embracing Christ as your Lord and Savior.

  2. Overcome Fear of Rejection – Just as Jesus faced rejection, we too will encounter opposition. Stay faithful and trust that God’s truth prevails.

  3. Guard Against Sinful Distractions – Like Herod, we can be torn between the world and God’s call. Make choices that honor Christ rather than compromise for temporary pleasures.

  4. Stay Rooted in Faith – Build your faith on good soil by daily seeking God’s Word and allowing it to shape your thoughts and actions.

  5. Proclaim the Kingdom – Just as John boldly spoke the truth, we are called to share the Gospel, even when it’s unpopular. Be a voice for God’s truth in a world that needs Him.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to see You clearly and not let doubt, pride, or sin cloud my vision. Strengthen my faith so I may stand firm even in rejection. Give me boldness like John the Baptist and a heart that seeks Your Kingdom above all else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
