Soul Value

Watch: Pastor Cam’s message entitled “Soul Value”, and then work through the following.

Scripture Reading: Matthew 16:24-28

Summary:

In Matthew 16:24-28, Jesus presents a powerful challenge to His disciples, calling them to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him. This passage highlights the eternal value of the soul and warns against the deception of worldly success. Jesus makes it clear that gaining everything the world has to offer means nothing if it results in the loss of one’s soul.

Following Him requires self-denial, submission, and a willingness to endure suffering for the sake of the gospel. This choice is not forced upon us; rather, Jesus invites us to decide whom we will serve. As believers, we must ask ourselves: Are we setting our minds on the things of God, or are we consumed by earthly desires? Scripture reminds us that while following Jesus may bring rejection and suffering, it also leads to eternal life and true fulfillment.

The call to discipleship is not simply about belief but about daily surrender—laying down our selfish ambitions and embracing the life Christ offers. In a world that prioritizes temporary gain, we must live with an eternal perspective, seeking treasures in heaven rather than fleeting rewards on earth.

Key Scriptures: Matthew 16:24-28; 2 Timothy 2:11-13; Romans 6:8; John 15:18-19; 1 John 2:17; Matthew 6:19-21; Romans 12:1-2; Luke 9:23

Discussion Questions:

  1. What does it mean to "deny yourself" in practical, everyday terms?

  2. How can you tell if you are prioritizing worldly success over your relationship with Christ?

  3. What are some modern-day “crosses” that believers must carry, and how can we endure them?

  4. How does understanding the eternal value of your soul change the way you live today?

  5. Jesus says, “Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” What does it look like to truly surrender your life to Him?

Personal Application:

  1. Evaluate Your Priorities – Take time to reflect on what you are chasing in life. Are your goals rooted in worldly success or in God’s kingdom?

  2. Daily Surrender – Each morning, commit to denying yourself and following Jesus, asking Him to guide your actions and decisions.

  3. Embrace Suffering for Christ – Don’t shy away from hardship or rejection for the sake of your faith. Remember, Jesus faced opposition, and so will His followers.

  4. Invest in Eternity – Focus on storing up treasures in heaven by serving others, sharing the gospel, and living a life that reflects Christ.

  5. Stay Faithful – When challenges come, hold on to God’s promises, remembering that He rewards those who endure and remain steadfast in Him.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the truth of Your Word and the reminder that our souls have eternal value. Help us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow You wholeheartedly. Give us the strength to endure hardships, the wisdom to prioritize eternal treasures over worldly gain, and the faith to trust in Your perfect plan. Lord, when we are tempted to seek our own desires over Yours, draw us back to Your presence and remind us of the life You offer. Strengthen our commitment to live for You daily, and let our lives be a reflection of Your love and grace.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
